Anthropology: the meeting point of science and culture.
Department Director
Miguel Vaz de Almeida
The Department of Anthropology of the ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon was founded in 1982 and has been since a context of reference for teaching and research in Anthropology in Portugal.

The Department has been successfully articulating the theoretical and the ethnographic historical legacy of Anthropology with the analysis of social, local and global processes which involve cultural differences and are connected with international relations, nationalism, ethnicity, migration processes and new forms of coexistence and cultural and political negotiation. The Department of Anthropology pursues the aim of providing the students and researchers with a solid theoretical and scientific education, with the necessary instruments for carrying on research and, lastly, with professional skills which enable them to analyze and intervene in areas involving knowledge and ethnographic material and immaterial heritage, as well as to analyze the social, ethical and political implications of the inter-cultural relations that embrace the contemporary societies.

In close connection with the associated research unit, the Network Centre for Research in Anthropology (CRIA-IUL), the Department focuses on such strategic areas of teaching and research as the context of Lusophony, the issues of social and human development and the promotion of techniques and audiovisual media as a means of production and dissemination of anthropological knowledge. The group of lecturers and researchers is equally dedicated to pursuing and directing research in a range of areas (theoretical, methodological, and ethnographic) which characterize and give the Anthropology its specificity in the framework of the Social Sciences and Humanities.

In the scope of the national framework, the Department of Anthropology of the ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon is the one that offers the greatest diversity of themes in the courses, and receives the largest number of students and the best assessment in external and international evaluation.
