Department of Political Science and Public Policy [School of Sociology and Public Policy]

The knowledge of political phenomena is an obligatory condition for action in today's world, either in professional and public policy domains, or in the field of participation and citizenship. Our wish is that the Department of Political Science and Public Policy of the ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon makes a high quality contribution to these professional and citizenship objectives by means of the courses it offers and of the research produced by its professors.

Department Director
Ana Maria Belchior

The Department of Political Science and Public Policy (DCPPP), which integrates the School of Sociology and Public Policy (ESPP), was established in 2010, bringing together the scientific areas of Political Science, African Studies, Human Geography, Public Policy, and Social Work, formerly belonging to the Department of Sociology. The new department resulted from the strategic development plan of the ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon, as well as from the recognition of the volume and quality of the work produced in these scientific areas both in the teaching and the research fields.

The DCPPP integrates a qualified faculty of 17 PhD professors out of 21 faculty professors engaged in teaching activity, mainly in the different courses tutored by the DCPPP:

  • Two degrees, one in Political Science and another in Social Work;
  • Six Masters in the scientific areas of: Public Administration, Political Science, African Studies, Public Policy, Social Policy, and Social Work;
  • Three PhD degrees in the scientific areas of:African Studies, Public Policy, and Social Work;
  • Three post-graduations in:
    • Assessment and Organizational Development in Public Administration,
    • Communication and Crisis Management, and Social Work,
    • Family Social Policies in Europe (international post-graduation); and
  • A Specialization Course in Policies for Equality and Corporate Social Responsibility.

New PhD and Master courses are currently previewed, as well as others will be altered, yet to be made public after approval by the relevant bodies.

The DCPPP gives great importance to the research conducted by the faculty professors, whose quality can be attested by the publications resulting from the research carried on particularly in the Centre for Research and Studies of Sociology (CIES-IUL), a research center which has always been classified as "Excellent". One of the strategic lines of the DCPPP, equally a distinctive trace of the School, is the combination of research and teaching, particularly regarding the Masters and the PhD programs.

The DCPPP’s educational perspective relies on three main strands:
1) the articulation of the theoretical, methodological and technical education;
2) the incentive for carrying out of empirical work by students, appropriate for the degree attended;
3) the importance attached to the monitoring of students in their learning process and to the assessment of the courses, of the curriculum units and of the professors.
