The Department of History is a teaching unit of the ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon in the scientific fields of History, International Relations and Museum Studies and currently includes 11 full-time scholars and three part-time ones. They form a highly qualified faculty consisting entirely of PhDs, with extensive teaching and research experience. The Department of History also boasts of cooperation with other scholars and specialists, lecturing specific courses.

The Department of History offers a comprehensive programme of study and specialization in Modern and Contemporary History which consists of three levels of study: Degree in Modern and Contemporary History, Master in Modern and Contemporary History and PhD in Modern and Contemporary History. It also offers a postgraduation course in Heritage and Cultural Projects, and a Master in Museology: exhibition contents (in partnership with the Department of Anthropology, ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon) of the Master and Ph.D in History, Defense and International Relations (in partnership with the Military Academy). The Department equally participates in the inter-university PhD in History in partnership with the Institute of Social Sciences of the Universidade de Lisboa (ICS-UL), with Universidade de Évora and with Universidade Católica. The Department’s scholars are also responsible for lecturing various courses in Degrees and Masters in other departments of the ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon.

The scholars of the Department of History participate in research centers, where relevant research in Modern and Contemporary History is carried out. The Department has a privileged relationship with the Center for Studies in Contemporary History (CEHC-IUL), a research unit where almost all faculty of the Department belong. The research and the applied History result in achievement of various research projects, publications, scientific meetings and scientific dissemination activities. Thus, the students of the Department of History are also provided with strong contact with scientific research (1st cycle), research-oriented experience (2nd cycle) and development of research in History (3rd cycle).
