Housing

The International Relations Office (IRO) provides all the necessary guidance and information before arrival and assistance will be given automatically upon arrival.

Exchange students are not required to fill in any special application form for accommodation. We just ask students to fill in the regular application form (where a little information about accommodation is required). However, students who intend to apply to the ISCTE-IUL University Residence Hall must fill in the appropriate application form (more information below).

Accommodation Options - Provisional Accommodation

Youth Hostels

Because we cannot book private accommodation on behalf of students, it is advisable to make a booking at a city youth hostel for the first few days of your stay, especially while you are looking for accommodation (cost approximately €16,00/night), unless you are staying at the university hall of residence.

You can book it online or contact the Central booking Service by phone +351 707 203 030, monday to friday, from 9:00am to 6:00pm, by fax +351 217 232 101 or by e-mail.

There are two youth hostel's in Lisbon. Check the links from more information:

Pousada da Juventude de Picoas

Pousada da Juventude do Parque das Nações

To stay at a youth hostel, you need to get an International Youth Hostel Card (cost approximately €6,00/one year).

The Portuguese Youth Card holders can also benefit from this type of accommodation. For more information, visit the Youth Hostel site here.

University Residence Professor José Pinto Peixoto

    alojamento ISCTE-IUL

The ISCTE-IUL University Residence meets some of the accommodation needs of its visiting students and teachers who have so far only been served by the private accommodation market all over Lisbon. Located in the 17th-century Santos-o-Novo Monastery, which is classified as a National Monument, on a small hill by the river Tagus in Lisbon's east end, the residence has a splendid view and is a short distance from the central railway station of Santa Apolónia, the traditional neighbourhood of Alfama, downtown Lisbon, Terreiro do Paço, and the new residential, retail and service area of Parque das Nações.

Since there are more applicants than vacancies, it will not be possible to provide accommodation at the hall residence for all exchange students. The criterion used is the date of arrival of the application form.

The residence is located at Pátio das Comendadeiras, Calçada das Lages, Santos-o-Novo.This area is served by buses that travel around a large city area, and go to important central areas, such as Terreiro do Paço, Marquês de Pombal, Rato, Saldanha, etc.

For more information about the residence and the application process check the link or download the brochure.

      Private Housing

The IRO selects and organizes a database of apartments available for short-term rentals in Lisbon, especially intended for international students.

The offer considered as recommended by IRO will be sent via e-mail to all nominated students, along with a broader package of information.

Upon arrival, students receive practical assistance in finding accommodation, or by elements of the IRO or by regular students of ISCTE-IUL who volunteer to help new international students (see Buddy Mentoring).

No student is advised to rent a room without visiting, unless it is strongly recommended by someone you trust.

The average cost of a single room is around € 250 / € 350 per month and a double room around € 200 per month. The amount equivalent to two months’ rent in advance (deposit) is generally required (one month's rent and one deposit). Usually, the costs of water, electricity, gas and internet are added to the rent.

      Room swapping

It might be a good idea to get in touch with other students at your university who have already been to ISCTE-IUL. They can inform you, give you contact information and even help with negotiations.
